An Obi-Wan Series Is In The Works With Ewan McGregor Returning
This is awesome.
Ewan McGregor may be picking up his lightsaber again. The 48-year-old Scottish actor is in talks about reprising his role as the heartfelt but headstrong Jedi master known as Obi-Wan Kenobi in a yet-to-be-titled Disney+ series, Deadline has confirmed.
Details about the series following the Jedi master are being kept under wraps. McGregor played the younger version of the wise but irascible Star Wars icon in the three prequel films: The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002) and Revenge of the Sith (2005). McGregor also revisited the role to make a voice-only cameo in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015).
Plans to produce a stand-alone Kenobi feature film morphed into the current plan for a big-budget series for Disney+, just as the discussion of a Boba Fett film gave way to the similarly spirited The Mandalorian series. (via Deadline)
Nobody got the short of the stick from the Star Wars prequels more than Ewan McGregor. His portrayal of Obi-Wan, despite weak scripts, was fantastic. Well, minus the delivery of this line…
Not great, but we can look past that.
There are two routes they can go with this storyline…
1) Show the Clone Wars with him and Anakin. Bring back Hayden Christensen! He deserves a chance without the bad Lucas script. One of the biggest issues with the Prequels was that they were so fucking boring. Scenes like this left everyone wondering what could have been…
We wanted to see the shit they are talking about in this scene! Don’t recap your fighting… show it! So with a limited series, making a big-budget war style storyline would be incredible. You could even bring back Samuel L. Jackson as Mace Windu, a role he has always wanted to reprise.
2) Following an older Obi-Wan. This one might be a little more boring, but it would make sense with Ewan McGregor being a decade-plus older than when the prequels came out. He appears as an older character in the ‘Star Wars Rebels’ TV series and even comes face-to-face with a familiar foe: Darth Maul.
Maul is obviously alive still following the events of ‘The Phantom Menace’ and we are shown this fact (reminded, really, because fans of the TV show knew this already) in ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’…
Talk about fan service. A lame scene, but still slightly cool, right?
The issue is that they’d have to shift around canon (I won’t spoil anything) and I can’t totally see them doing that. Would they re-create the Rebels storyline for live-action? Not sure.
